Cumbia Sonidera

"Ramon Velarde’s instrumental interpretation of Mexican cumbia in the style of the cumbia sonidera movement.

Cumbia sonidera is more than a musical genre. It is a social and cultural phenomenon that spread from the popular neighborhoods of Mexico City in the wake of live public performances and street dances enlivened by disc jockey animators - the "sonideros" - outfitted with audio equipment, lights and video....

The sonidero usually plays tropical genre music - with an emphasis on Colombian Cumbia - sending messages to the public and while simultaneously creating their own sound effects. This movement boomed in the 1980s and 1990s spreading to other urban areas, particularly in the states and cities adjacent to the Mexican capital. Sonidera music today is resurging largely due to the proliferation of the internet. Emerging musical groupings are performing with arrangements that adapt to the beats and choreography of the dancers attending these events.
